The project location is in Al Rai, a diverse industrial area in Kuwait City which reflects a certain tension between tradition and modernity. The massive economic changes and developments that occurred in the middle of the 20th century guaranteed ideal conditions from which this country has emerged, setting itself as one of the wealthiest and most culturally significant countries of the Middle East.
This proposal hosts a plant nursery, inserted in a clear urban dynamic of showrooms, markets and shops, with the mission to create the necessary conditions for different vegetation species, most of them not indigenous, to develop and grow, protected from the severe city climate.
Due to its commercial purpose, a building of this nature demands a complexity of infrastructures that allows it to perform accordingly to its tasks. Therefore, its layout is developed to indulge a certain particular experience as it cycles the customer flow through its interior.
Despite the fact that when looked upon from the street, the facade has the appearance of a two-floor construction, it is, in reality, composed of three layers of activities. Those interact between vertical and horizontal circulations, which connect the several parts of the building. The basement floor contains a double-height area, specially developed for trees of considerable size, as well as a furniture display and storage. From the ground floor it is possible to see the tree tops placed below, to visit the greenhouse and the interior showroom. At the main entrance, an outdoor stand for smaller plants is presented as the only exterior part of the building, which can be permanent or seasonally mounted, according with the necessities. The first floor is reserved for administration offices and technical areas, such as climate and humidity control.
The white metallic mesh outer shell, which allows to see trough, reflects the image of one industrial and modern building. Its steel truss structure combines the intended lightness, construction efficiency and flexibility of infrastructure composition, whilst creating a high-tech ambience. Conceptually, it reinterprets the natural structure of a tree, a dense top resting on a delicate structural element, which then connects with its strong ramified foundations.
