Centrally located within Kuwait City’s urban fabric, the Kuwait National Olympic Committee’s new headquarters transforms the generic Office Block and the monolithic Pavilion typologies into a multi-use, integrated landscape. Presented as a singular, unified element that mediates and occupies almost the entire plot at the edge of a primarily residential neighborhood, the building allows for the entire footprint of the site to be inhabited.

By lifting the ground plane into the air, an otherwise solid impenetrable mass is transformed into a useful and comfortable public space integrated into the urban fabric. The structured shaded sports field provides local residents with a quality space that can be used year-round, potentiating interactions between Kuwaitis and the Olympic Values and Ideals embodied and fostered by the National Olympic Committee.

The sandstone facade that wraps around the volume is pierced throughout by circles of various diameters. This pattern, whose geometry is based on the Olympic Rings, references traditional Kuwaiti architectural forms that have for generations successfully protected those inside from the intense light while allowing for cooling breezes and a sense of privacy within.

The tower facing Highway 40 housing the offices of the Kuwait Olympic Committee rises as another emblematic addition to Kuwait’s Skyline, offering those inside sweeping views and filtered light through the circular facade screen, those outside a new landmark to navigate the city and a new symbol to celebrate the spirit of the Olympic Ideals amongst all Kuwaitis.
